WEEK 3: Window, shade and direct sun light

Your activities of this week are to take a series of portraits outside.

Shoot using window light

f/2.8 1/160 ISO 100

Shot of Chris using window light on the right side of his face. Although it's a sun light (large light + softer light) it's a source light that has n enough level of intensity to create strong shadows on Chris's face. I tried different windows and this one brought me the best results. Not too much light for the image I had in mind and lot of space to place Chris parallel to the window. I got a nice contrast on his face.

Shot using open shade

I took Chris downstairs the office, where I found an area between two buildings, that blocked the direct sunlight but still illuminated from the surrounding light. It was noon and that harsh light affected Chris' eyes, even though we were in the open shade. With no smiles, I knew I had to take quick the shot. I placed Chris close to the edge of the shadow. The result was ok. A soft light on his face coming from the reflection of the opposite building.

Shot using direct sunlight

Harsh and unwanted shadows under the eyes, chins, nose... unwanted contrast and highlights too. Even the green badge looks saturated. Next time I will use my tools (flash, reflector, diffuser) to get a better shot.

Thanks for reading and watch!
